Rockstar Games istaking a more controlled approach to character switching in Grand Theft Auto VI, and it could make Jason and Lucia’s story feel more connected than the system seen in GTA V.
The two protagonists will both be playable, but players shouldn’t expect to freely switch between them at any point during every mission.
According to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, the ability to change between Jason and Lucia will depend on what is happening in the story. Some missions will allow players to switch between the two characters, while others will keep the player with one protagonist to preserve the impact of the scene.
This approach is similar to what Rockstar did in GTA V, but the studio appears to be pushing the idea further in GTA VI.
Character Switching Will Depend on the Situation
The decision seems to be less about restricting the player and more about making the story work naturally.
During certain missions, Jason may be the obvious character to control because of what is happening at that moment. In other situations, control can move between Jason and Lucia as the action develops.
That could make missions feel more cinematic without completely removing player freedom.
There will also be situations where switching characters is much more flexible. Outside missions, players will reportedly have the freedom to switch between Jason and Lucia while exploring the world.
Rockstar Is Prioritizing the Story
One of the interesting parts of Rockstar's approach is that the studio doesn't want the character-switching system to interfere with the relationship between Jason and Lucia.
The two characters aren't simply separate protagonists sharing the same map. Their stories are closely connected, and Rockstar appears to be using the switching system to reinforce that connection.
Instead of giving players unlimited control at every moment, the game can decide when switching makes sense for the story.
That could result in missions where the player experiences the same situation from different perspectives without making the transition feel forced.
GTA 6 Still Gives Players Freedom
Despite these restrictions during certain missions, GTA VI isn't abandoning the freedom that the series is known for.
When players aren't locked into a specific story sequence, they will be able to explore Leonida and switch between Jason and Lucia.
This means the system could offer the best of both approaches: more control over the cinematic parts of the story, while still giving players plenty of freedom during open-world gameplay.
Why This Could Matter
GTA V showed how switching between protagonists could completely change the way a mission plays out.
GTA VI appears to be building on that idea while putting more emphasis on the relationship between its two main characters.
The result may be a system that feels less like switching between separate characters and more like following two sides of the same story.
With the game's November 19, 2026 release date approaching, Rockstar is gradually revealing more about how Jason and Lucia will actually work together — and the character-switching system is one of the details that could have a surprisingly big impact on the final experience.
